Work Designation – Depending on your location within the continental US, this role may be hybrid or remote.

  • If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership.
  • If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance.

What does it take to be successful in this role?

• Thorough, comprehensive and current understanding of US GAAP and US Statutory accounting and financial reporting principles

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor's Degree In Accounting, finance or a related discipline
  • Certified Public Accountant license
  • Six years of experience in Accounting Policy or Advisory or a closely related field such as public accounting experience
  • Strong experience with US GAAP and US Statutory accounting rules for these areas including, but not limited to, insurance, reinsurance, business combinations, leases, stock-based compensation, revenue recognition, goodwill & intangible assets, foreign currency transactions/translation, taxes, financial instruments including investments, securities, derivatives, transfers of financial instruments
  • SEC reporting related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

• Actively addresses technical accounting issues stemming from the changing business needs of Aflac; documents decisions in memos, executive summaries, and financial accounting policies.

• Monitors changes in US GAAP, IFRS, US Statutory, and JGAAP that would potentially affect the financial reporting process and business of Aflac; drafts comment letters in response to the exposure drafts for submission to various regulatory bodies; models impact of the proposal stage literature on Aflac’s business and portfolio.

• Researches or helps with research by other team members of technical bulletins and pronouncements from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and other regulatory authorities to ensure conformity in financial applications.

• Works with the business partners to prepare detailed analyses of proposed accounting practices to determine impact on the organization; reviews findings with management and disseminates results to appropriate departments.

• Communicates accounting policies and positions both verbally and in writing with senior management and external and internal auditors.

• Provides guidance to maintain quality applications and to ensure compliance with accounting policies.

• Ensures that global accounting policy library and accounting checklists are continually updated and appropriate members of US and Japan-based Finance and business partners are regularly updated about relevant changes.

• Assists Actuaries, Financial Services, Aflac Global Ventures, Corporate Development, Global Investments and other partners on special projects with accounting and analytical expertise; collaborates and works closely with Financial Services personnel in the review and analysis of significant and highly complex business transactions.

• Serves as a knowledge leader in new accounting standards implementation projects and ensures that all new accounting requirements have been appropriately evaluated and implemented by implementation teams.

• Proactively supports the maintenance of the Corporate Accounting Policy Manual and other accounting deliverables, including, but not limited to, updates, newsletter and checklists.

• Provides the necessary leadership across functions and business partner teams to ensure inclusion of appropriate individuals in accounting issue resolution or implementation of new accounting standards.

• May represent the company externally on issues relating to accounting policy through participation in industry-wide associations and related organizational meetings.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Total Rewards

This compensation range is specific to the job level and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Aflac at the time of the posting. Compensation decisions are dependent on the circ*mstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate. The salary range for this position is $72,000 to $167,000.

In addition to the base salary, we offer an array of benefits to meet your needs including medical, dental, and vision coverage, prescription drug coverage, health care flexible spending, dependent care flexible spending, Aflac supplemental policies (Accident, Cancer, Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity offered at no costs to employee), 401(k) plans, annual bonuses, and an opportunity to purchase company stock. On an annual basis, you’ll also be offered 11 paid holidays, up to 20 days PTO to be used for any reason, and, if eligible, state mandated sick leave (Washington employees accrue 1 hour sick leave for every 40 hours worked) and other leaves of absence, if eligible, when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being. Aflac complies with all applicable leave laws, including, but not limited to sick and safe leave, and adoption and parental leave, in all states and localities.
