Generally, the soft girl is defined by the internet (dictionary.com ) as a fashion style popular among some young women on social media, based on a deliberately cutesy, feminine look. It often features pink and yellow colors, floral and heart patterns, oversized sweaters and plaid skirts, and heavy blush makeup. Being a soft girl also may involve a tender, sweet, vulnerable personality. And to break it down in more details, here’s a short guide that we came up with on how the soft girls adapt the soft girl aesthetic to themselves.
Soft and playful personality
A soft girl’s personality can be shown through the lenses. They try to portray that type of personality by showcasing to its audience a bunch of playful elements. These may be in the type of clothes that they wear, the type of makeup that they do, the type of accessories that they put on themselves.
We also say that they exhibit this type of personality since they’re going for the vulnerability that is often possessed by a child. Remember that a soft girl’s charisma is due from their ability to dress and portray themselves like that of a little girl.
The are different types of soft girls so you can’t really define them under one general definition.
Dress in pastel colors
As previously mentioned from the blog, the basics of soft girl fashion lies on pastel-colored clothing. Just like the name suggests, soft girls try soften their appearances by wearing soft colors in their fashion. Pastel colors like baby blue, soft pink, pastel yellow - these types of colors are a must have in this aesthetic. Planning to dress like a soft girl yourself? Hoard some clothes that harbor these color palettes and you’re on your way to dressing like one.
Makeup varies
The soft girl makeup varies from the type of getup that you want to achieve for the day. For example, if you want to go out on a regular day dressing like a soft girl but you don’t want to go extra with your getup, then a simple makeup will do. Just make sure that you highlight your lip gloss though since that’s one of the main points of the soft girl makeup, and maybe add a little bit of glitter on your eyelids. But, if you’re feeling a little extra, and feeling like you want some extra oomph of cuteness, then you can play with the colors that you put on your makeup. Going a little extra on the blush is one examples for this one. Or, doing simple yet aesthetically pleasing cheek art on the face is one significant feature that soft girls often do on their makeup. Add of course, don’t forget about the glitters as they are part of the highlights of the makeup. You just need to know how to place them strategically.
Use crop tops...
One of the favorite staples of soft girls are their beloved crop tops. Using crop tops gives off a baby girl effect to the one wearing it. Of course, these tops need to fit by what we just mentioned on the second guide, which is to make sure that these tops are in a certain soft or pastel color. Well, it doesn’t necessarily need to be strictly in pastel colors alone. Colors white, yellow, even red are fine just as long as it doesn’t destroy the soft aesthetic balance that you are going for. Just remember that if the color on your top is too dark, try to lessen its contrast by layering other soft colors on your getup.
...and skirts, a lot
I’m pretty much sure we mentioned plaid skirts in our blogs before. Skirts, are another staple item in this aesthetic. Honestly, I can only picture girls on skirts whenever we talk about the soft girl aesthetic fashion so that says a lot about that. Aside from plaid skirts that can come in different colors, there are also pleated skirts such as the tennis ones, there are also the short flowy skirts - all these can be used for this aesthetic.
Use soft patterns
While they don’t use a lot of patterns on their clothing, doesn’t mean they don’t use it at all. In fact, they do use tops or cardigans with patterns on it. If it’s a graphic one, they most likely to limit it to a minimal design or a big design that doesn’t grab a lot of attention due to its subtle details. If they use patterns, they make sure that the material of the clothing that they have that pattern on has a soft fabric on it, just like of a wool texture material. And lastly, using soft colors with these patterns help minimize its hard contrasts.
Accessorize colorfully
Using hair accessories is one way of adding texture to your fashion. As for the soft girl aesthetic, there’s no limit to how you should accessories your hair just as long it doesn’t destroy the color balance in your getup (Besides, the soft girl aesthetic is highly different from the decora fashion aesthetic that centers more on heavy duty colored accessories.). A cute way to do this is by placing two huge hair clips on your hair, can be of different colors (but pastel is always the way to go), or go with small clips and distribute them evenly on you hair.
Cute dresses
A dress will always be a part of a girls wardrobe, and the soft girl aesthetic doesn’t miss out on that. The soft girl dresses are mostly short on length, a few inches above the knee. There are a few ways that they style this with. Either they wear it on its own and adding another layer of a lighter colored cardigan, or they place and wear a shirt underneath first, and then add on the dress as a top layer.
The style of the dresses are often in the form of plaids. Doesn’t matter if its a sleeveless dress of an off-shoulder one, the cute dresses will never be missed from the perspective of a soft girl.
Mom jeans
If you’re choosing for bottoms other than the skirts that you have in your wardrobe, then your trusty mom jeans is the ways to go. Since these jeans are a bit high-waisted, they’re a great pair for your crop tops. What's nice about these jeans is how it's flattering to anyone who uses it. Styling it with a crop top? Nice combination! Styling it with a hoodie? Just tuck it in inside your pants and you can already create a ready-to-go outfit for the day! For a more added touch, you can style this with a cute belt that you think that fits with your OOTD.
Go grand on shoes
Your shoes doesn’t have to indifferent to conform to the soft girl aesthetic. In fact, most of them love dressing up using huge shoes as their footwear. When I say huge shoes, I am talking about those chunky sneakers that you often see on Instagram. You can also try on some doll shoes or some cute combat boots that goes well with your attire.
Bangs and space buns
As for hairstyles that falls under this aesthetic, there are no particular way you should do your hair. But as observed, most girls do have bangs to their hairstyles. Well, this is to be expected as bangs are often associated as a cute hairstyle that anyone can do. As for the rest of the hair, it doesn’t really matter how you style it just as long it fits your taste.
Another famous way of doing your hair is by doing some space buns. Space buns are a fun way to do your hairstyle, too, or maybe you can part your hair into ponytails. Space buns in particular is found to be a famous way among the girls under this aesthetic when it comes to hairstyles. So, go ahead and try this style plus when you are trying to accessorize.
Aesthetic overlays
And lastly, I am going to talk about one of the most defining features of a soft girl when it comes to their cyberspace engagement, and that is in the way that they edit their photos for their social media presence.
Fair enough, I started this one blog that I wrote regarding the soft girl aesthetic this way, “If you see a photo of someone wearing a lot of pink, with a cute dress, and hearts graphically overlaid on the image, most likely the person posting that image is a soft girl,” and basically, that’s what I am trying to say here. This can be done by adding/using filters to your image. You can also do this by editing your photo through Photoshop or by any editing software that utilizes photo layers. You can get filters from Snapchat or you can create your very own filters by editing it on your own. You can do this by lowering your photo's saturation and adding pink hues on your photo.
