Is Joy Ride worth watching? ›

If you enjoy comedies with a solid storyline as well, offering more than just cheap slapstick comedy, then director Adele Lim's 2023 movie "Joy Ride" certainly is well-worth taking 95 minutes to sit down and watch.

When Audrey's business trip to Asia goes sideways, she enlists the help of Lolo, her childhood best friend, Kat, a college friend, and Deadeye, Lolo's eccentric cousin. Their epic, no-holds-barred experience becomes a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveals the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.

It was theatrically released on July 7, 2023, by Lionsgate Films. It was originally scheduled to be released on June 23. The film was released for digital platforms on July 28, 2023, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release on September 12, 2023.

Is the film based on a true story? Writer/director Lim tells TODAY.com that the story of Audrey, Lolo, Kat and Deadeye was loosely inspired by her own friends. She says all her friends did in their 20s was "hang out, go out partying and tell stories about our messy dating lives."

Audrey needed to come to terms with who she was, how it's shaped her, and letting go of the need to be perfect to be accepted. Audrey was not as comfortable with her identity the way Lolo and Kat were, but by the end of Joy Ride she shed preconceived notions about her background and embraced who she was, flaws and all.

Why is 'Joy Ride' rated R? “Joy Ride” is rated R for strong and crude sexual content, language throughout, drug content and brief graphic nudity, according to the Classification and Ratings Administration. That means anyone under 17 needs to see the movie with a parent or adult guardian.

It was released in the United States on October 5, 2001, and in the UK under the title Road Kill on April 26, 2002, and in Australia as Roadkill. The alternate titles were because of the negative connotations of “joy rides” as stealing cars rather than fun roadtrips.

Wong says, “Making 'Joy Ride' work in Vancouver as China, Seoul and Paris was very challenging because Vancouver doesn't look like any of those places. It took everybody getting on board, putting our heads together and finding the right locations.”

It's summer break and college freshman Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker) has decided to embark on a cross-country road trip to pick up the girl of his dreams, Venna (Leelee Sobieski). But Lewis' romantic hopes hit a detour when he stops on the way to rescue his older brother, Fuller (Steve Zahn), who goads him into playing a practical joke on a lonely trucker, over a CB radio. Now, that trucker, an unseen and terrifying force known only by his CB handle, Rusty Nail, wants the last laugh and revenge.

There is a lot of drinking and drugs in the first half of the movie. Overall I would say that it's probably best left for 16+ unless your kid is super mature about sex and you're okay with them watching and hearing the things in this movie.

What happens at the end of Joy Ride? ›

In the first ending Lewis is able to break the board that is supporting the truck and it comes crashing down on top of Rusty Nail. In the second ending, Venna is able to get out of the chair. She shoots Rusty Nail with the shotgun as he is trying to pull Lewis under the truck.

Joyride, starring Olivia Colman – who is also in the streamer's top 10 films chart with Wicked Little Letters – and Charlie Reid and Lochlann Ó Mearáin was first released in 2022, but just made its debut on the platform.

The budget for this film is said to be around $32 million.

Filmed in the glorious south west of Ireland, directed by Emer Reynolds (The Farthest) from a script by Ailbhe Keogan (Run and Jump), Joyride is a warm, funny and touching story about motherhood, friendship and acceptance.

As it is, it's watchable but a bit of a disappointment. Slow and not at all a joy to watch! It at least earns a 5 because there are some nice performances. The film MIGHT have worked better had the first half of the movie been reduced significantly and the final portion accentuated further.

If you want some intense love story, Ao Haru Ride or its English name Blue Spring Ride is the right choice. Story move fast and our heart simultaneously beating with the character. I hope it will be season 2 which is will be the final season I guess.

Joy Ride 2 certainly doesn't live up to the first one, but it's still a bone-chilling and entertaining ride.
